Concerns raised over non-renewal of gun licences

Gun Free South Africa has raised concerns about the non-renewal of gun licences in the country.

Gun Free South Africa Executive Director Dr Stanley Maphosa says according to their research, gun licence renewal has dropped about 75% since 2022.

Maphosa says police should follow up on owners who don’t renew their gun licences as this poses a serious risk to the community.

“Our research shows a crisis [in the] renewing of licences. Because it has dropped drastically by about 75% since 2022. When the Constitutional Court ruling was made, hundreds of thousands of owners have not renewed their licences. The law requires [gun owners] to do so. Those guns that have licences that are not renewed, they are already outside the law, they are already illegally possessed,” adds Maphosa. –Reporting by Goitseone Moremi
