Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire — Nigeria’s Flying Eagles suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the final of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship on Saturday at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro.
The defending champions were overwhelmed by a ruthless first-half performance from the Young Stallions, who established a commanding three-goal lead before the break and never looked back.
Burkina Faso started the contest with purpose and intensity, putting Nigeria under sustained pressure from the opening exchanges. Their aggressive approach and direct attacking play exposed weaknesses in the Flying Eagles’ defence, with three goals arriving in a devastating first-half spell.
Nigeria struggled to find a response as Burkina Faso’s pace and movement continued to trouble the backline, leaving the Flying Eagles facing a daunting 3-0 deficit at half-time.
The second half brought renewed hope for Nigeria when forward Muiz Adeleke converted from the penalty spot to reduce the deficit to 3-1.
The goal sparked a brief revival as Abdu Maikaba’s side pushed higher in search of a comeback. The Flying Eagles created opportunities and showed greater attacking intent, but Burkina Faso remained compact and disciplined at the back.
The Young Stallions eventually put the contest beyond doubt with a late fourth goal, sealing an emphatic 4-1 victory and completing a memorable championship triumph.
The defeat marked Nigeria’s second loss to Burkina Faso in the tournament, with the Young Stallions having also defeated the Flying Eagles during the group stage.
With the victory, Burkina Faso deservedly lifted the WAFU B U-20 trophy and secured qualification for next year’s Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.
The Young Stallions will represent the WAFU B zone at the continental tournament alongside hosts Ghana, who also secured their place at the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.
