Katsina United midfielder Ozoh Chinedu has died after collapsing during a pre-season friendly against Niger Tornadoes at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina on Tuesday.
The club confirmed the death of the midfielder, who had recently joined Katsina United from Kano Pillars ahead of the 2026/27 season.
According to a statement issued by the club’s media directorate, Ozoh suffered a medical emergency during the match and was immediately attended to before being rushed to K-Dara Specialist Hospital in Katsina.
Despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life, the player was pronounced dead at the hospital.
“Ozoh reportedly passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, August 11, 2026, after he was rushed to K-Dara Specialist Hospital in Katsina following a medical emergency during a friendly match involving Katsina United and Niger Tornadoes FC at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, Katsina,” the club said.
The statement added that the incident occurred while both teams were preparing for the new football season.
“The player was immediately attended to and subsequently rushed to the nearby K-Dara Specialist Hospital for urgent medical attention. However, despite efforts to save his life, Ozoh Chinedu sadly passed away,” it added.
Katsina United described the death as a “major shock” to the club and extended its condolences to Ozoh’s family, friends, teammates and the wider football community.
Ozoh had only recently completed his move from Kano Pillars to Katsina United as the club strengthened its squad for the forthcoming campaign.
The cause of the midfielder’s death had not been disclosed at the time of filing this report.
