Hospital building collapses in Cross River

A hospital building in Calabar, Cross River State, has collapsed following a reported landslide triggered by heavy rainfall and soil erosion.
A video shared on X on Friday captured the moment the building, which had been left precariously suspended after the ground beneath it was washed away, gradually gave way before crashing into the gully below.
The facility has been identified as UNICEM Hospital, a healthcare facility serving workers and residents in Calabar, Cross River State.
The incident was reported to have occurred on Thursday, August 13.
However, as of the time of filing this report, the Cross River State Government had yet to issue an official statement on the collapse.
The video has since sparked reactions on X, with many users expressing concern over the safety of anyone who may have been inside the building and calling for greater attention to erosion control and infrastructure safety.
An X user, #Dacolls1, wrote, “It seems there is a real environmental crisis in Calabar. The recurring landslides need proper investigation from professionals at this point but I think the lack of control of erosion is the main cause here.”
Also reacting, #okafor_nna54… wrote, “Hope no casualty? Because that’s the most important thing, right now the governments are not doing what they’re supposed to do to save lives because this building will be showing signs and nothing was done about it.”
Another user, #Northernigbo…, blamed the incident on poor construction, saying, “Things like this I guess the first person I’m locking up is the engineer.”
