A Belgian university has suspended Nathan Cofnas, an American researcher who publicly accused the late Cambridge professor Jason Arday of plagiarizing his doctoral thesis.

Ghent University confirmed the suspension of Cofnas, a postdoctoral researcher in its philosophy department, stating it was a precautionary measure while officials investigate his recent public statements.

The suspension comes shortly after Arday, who was the youngest Black professor appointed at the University of Cambridge, was found dead at his London home at the age of 41.

Prior to his death, Arday had resigned from his position at Cambridge following allegations raised by Cofnas. In a published post, Cofnas claimed that a plagiarism check of Arday’s PhD thesis revealed significant similarities to an earlier work by another researcher.

Cofnas also questioned Arday’s academic credentials and administrative appointments. In a statement released before his death, Arday cited intense public scrutiny and personal strain as reasons for stepping down from his role at Cambridge.

Ghent University Rector Petra de Sutter stated that the tragedy should prompt reflection on how academics treat one another during public controversies, while formal disciplinary proceedings regarding Cofnas remain ongoing.
