Pope: Good of the human family cannot be sacrificed to private interests
Pope Leo XIV encourages members of the International Institute of Administrative Sciences to continue their research “in order to find the ways and means of contributing to public administration in the humanization of digital technologies, so that they may serve life and peace” and warns of the real risk that humanity could “become victim” of the inventions it has created.

“We must ensure that the good of the human family is not sacrificed to private interests.”
Pope Leo XIV made this appeal on Friday in the Vatican to members of the International Institute of Administrative Sciences (IIAS), of which the Holy See is also a member.
Founded in 1930 in the aftermath of the Great Depression, the Institute seeks to help public authorities adapt governance to the changing needs of society.
Maintaining proper balance in the use of digital technologies
Recalling that the theme of this year’s Conference issued an appeal to our world in the digital age to maintain a proper balance in the use of digital technologies, the Pope said this appeal echoes that which he made in his Encyclical Magnifica humanitas on safeguarding the human person in the age of artificial intelligence.
Today, Pope Leo said, we cannot fail to confront this reality, which closely affects our way of life and permeates every level of social life.
‘Could humanity become victim of its own inventions?’
“The speed at which innovations in AI, in artificial intelligence,” he stressed, “are developing prompts us to ask whether, in the future, we will be able to control these machines, and whether humanity runs the risk of becoming victim of its own inventions.”
“One of the serious problems today,” the Pope specifically warned, “is the fact that decisions concerning human life are being entrusted to machines.”
In the face of this troubling situation, he commended the efforts of their gathering to reaffirm “the irreplaceable nature of human intelligence in the face of these technological tools” and urged them to help public authorities make decisions in this field “for the good of humanity.”
Ethical framework must accompany such important tools
He called for developing an ethical framework to accompany the use of these important tools, which, he suggested, are unfortunately becoming concentrated in the hands of major economic and technological actors, while the State struggles to exercise control over them.
“I encourage you,” he said, “to continue your research in order to find the ways and means of contributing to public administration in the humanization of digital technologies, so that they may serve life and peace.”
Acknowledging that their mission is not easy and that, at times, discouragement may threaten to overwhelm them, Pope Leo assured them that he prays to God that He may sustain them, so that they may continue in this noble task with determination.
