Pope Leo XIV appoints Archbishop Vittorio Francesco Viola as Archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica and Bishop Aurelio García Macías as Secretary of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Archbishop Vittorio Francesco Viola, O.F.M., as Archpriest of the Papal Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican, Vicar General of His Holiness for Vatican City, and President of the Fabric of St. Peter.
The Holy See announced the appointment in a press release on Saturday.
Archbishop Viola previously served as Secretary of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.
Born in Biella, Italy, on October 4, 1965, he made his solemn profession in the Order of Friars Minor in 1991 and was ordained a priest in 1993.
He holds a doctorate in sacred liturgy from Rome’s Pontifical Liturgical Institute of Sant’Anselmo and was appointed Bishop of Tortona in 2014, before becoming Secretary of the Dicastery in 2021.
Pope Leo also appointed Bishop Aurelio García Macías as Secretary of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.
He has served as the Dicastery’s Undersecretary since May 27, 2021, when Pope Francis also named him a bishop.
Born in Pollos, Spain, on March 28, 1965, Bishop García Macías was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Valladolid in 1992 and holds a doctorate in liturgy from the Pontifical Athenaeum of Saint Anselm.
A former rector of Valladolid’s diocesan seminary, Bishop García Macías began working at the Dicastery in 2015.
