The Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, has called on well-meaning Nigerians to support public hospitals following the donation of 30 hospital beds to the facility by a philanthropist, Mr Eze Chukwudi.
The donation, announced on Tuesday, comprises 30 hospital bed frames, 30 Mackintosh mattresses and 30 drip stands.
Ize-Iyamu described the contribution as a pleasant surprise, noting that it would help address critical infrastructure needs and complement government efforts to improve healthcare delivery.
In a statement sent to PUNCH Healthwise, she expressed gratitude to Chukwudi on behalf of the hospital’s management and staff, saying the donation would enhance its capacity to provide quality healthcare to patients.
“Your timely support came as a pleasant surprise, significantly alleviating a pressing need within our facility. This contribution directly enhances our capacity to provide quality healthcare to Nigerians, particularly patients who seek care here,” she said.
The CMD disclosed that the philanthropist was motivated to make the donation after observing the hospital’s needs during his aunt’s hospitalisation at its Accident and Emergency Unit.
She urged other individuals and organisations to emulate the gesture by supporting the government and the hospital in improving healthcare delivery.
On his part, Chukwudi said his experience at the Accident and Emergency Unit while his aunt was hospitalised inspired him to support vulnerable patients.
