Int’l Friendly: Super Falcons edge Senegal’s Lionesses 2-1

By Emmanuel Okogba

Nigeria’s Super Falcons kicked off their preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a 2-1 win over Senegal in a friendly match played in Ikenne-Remo on Friday.

The reigning African champions dominated large portions of the encounter, creating the better chances and controlling possession against the Teranga Lionesses.

After a lively opening period, Nigeria took the lead in the 32nd minute when Asisat Oshoala converted a penalty awarded to the Falcons. The goal marked a successful return to national team action for the experienced striker, who was making her first appearance since the last WAFCON final.

The Falcons continued to press forward and were rewarded again before halftime. Toni Payne finished off a flowing attacking move in the 43rd minute to double Nigeria’s advantage and give the hosts a comfortable lead heading into the break.

Senegal struggled to create clear-cut opportunities for much of the match as Nigeria dictated the pace and controlled the midfield exchanges.

The visitors, however, ensured a tense finish when they scored in the 86th minute to reduce the deficit. Despite the late setback, the Falcons remained composed and held on to secure the victory.

The match was the first meeting between Nigeria and Senegal at senior women’s level and formed part of both teams’ preparations for this year’s continental tournament in Morocco.

The two sides are scheduled to meet again in a second friendly at the same venue on June 8 as they continue to fine-tune their squads ahead of the competition.

Head coach Justine Madugu will be encouraged by the performance as the nine-time African champions continue their quest to retain the WAFCON title.
