The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says negotiations with businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala in the Medicare24 case have yielded results.
Matlala appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, where his case was separated from those of his 16 co-accused.
The arrests are linked to the Medicare24 contract saga stemming from allegations of corruption and fraud involving the awarding of a R228 million tender.
The accused, which include suspended Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola and other senior South African Police Service officers, are facing charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering.
NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago says more clarity on whether a plea agreement or deal has been reached will be provided when Matlala appears in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday.
“No, the issue is, it was very clear, even from the beginning, it was in an open court, you remember when we said that we wanted to negotiate with him, and then we also wanted him to be here, rather than being Kokstad. Therefore, that’s where the negotiations were happening. Therefore, unfortunately, until the matter is made, in order of court, we can’t say we have or we don’t have.
