18 000 deported as police brace for planned protests

The government says that, as of Saturday, more than 18 000 foreign nationals had been processed for deportation and repatriation.

The government says it has noted growing concerns among migrant communities regarding their safety amid planned protest action ahead of the unofficial June 30 deadline set by anti-migrant groups for undocumented migrants to leave South Africa.

Government spokesperson William Baloyi says police have so far opened 10 cases of intimidation and incitement of violence directed at migrants.

Baloyi has encouraged migrants who feel threatened or unsafe to urgently contact law enforcement agencies and government authorities.

Baloyi says, “Government unequivocally condemns all forms of intimidation, harassment, or violence directed at any individual within the Republic, irrespective of their nationality or immigration status. Law enforcement agencies, including the South African Police Service, have been placed on high alert to prevent any unlawful activities. Individuals or groups found engaging in acts of violence, intimidation, or incitement will be dealt with decisively in accordance with the law.”

Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal police have launched a double murder investigation following the deaths of two foreign nationals in Mandini.

The two individuals were found dead in Sundumbili early on Sunday morning after they reportedly stabbed each other.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda says, “Information available at this stage suggests that the two deceased were walking from the tavern but under the influence of alcohol and they stabbed each other. The other one was found by community members a few minutes away from the scene. It is believed they succumbed to the multiple stab wounds they sustained. The third person who witnessed the incident and who shares the same nationality with the deceased is wanted by police for information…”
