UNICEF, Kwara Prepare Woro Survivors, Community for Emotional Reunion

Ahead of the reunion of victims rescued from the February 3, 2026 massacre and abduction of 176 villagers in Woro, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Kwara State Government and other partners are providing mental health and psychosocial support to families and community members.

According to the UNICEF Chief of Field Office, Kaduna, Dr. Gereda Birukila who was represented by WASH Specialist of the agency, Theresa Pama at the inauguration of a two day Psychosocial support services training in Ilorin the state capital said the initiative is aimed at preventing discrimination, depression and other psychological challenges, while preparing the community to receive the survivors with care and understanding.

Dr. Gereda Birukila, said the programme would equip participants to create a supportive environment for the survivors after their traumatic experience.

The State Commissioner for Social Development, Dr. Mariam Nnafatimah Imam, and other speakers stressed the importance of mental health support in helping the survivors rebuild their lives and look forward to a better future.

The Woro survivors were rescued by security operatives earlier in August and have remained under the care and monitoring of the Kwara State Government, including medical attention, ahead of their reunification with their families and community.
