Abuja Outages Caused By Low Generation, Not Line Trips—TCN
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has dismissed as inaccurate and misleading claims by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) that a tripped transmission line caused a drop in electricity supply to the capital.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, TCN said it had noted a publication by AEDC dated August 26, 2026, in which the distribution company informed its customers of supply constraints and blamed the shortfall on the alleged tripping of transmission lines from the Shiroro Transmission Substation.
AEDC had said its power allocation dropped from about 641 megawatts to 314 megawatts as a result of the alleged line tripping.
However, TCN said the claim was false, explaining that the reduction was caused by low power generation on the national grid, and not by any fault on its transmission lines.
The company said all 330kV transmission lines within the Abuja region remained in circuit and functional, adding that no tripping of the lines supplying the Abuja axis, as claimed by AEDC, had occurred.
TCN therefore said the reduction in AEDC’s power allocation, and the resulting load shedding experienced by electricity consumers, could not be blamed on its transmission lines.
The company called for accuracy and clarity in public information dissemination, saying it remained committed to the efficient transmission of bulk electricity nationwide, and to maintaining the stability, reliability and integrity of Nigeria’s transmission grid.
