Adama Misses Podium Race As Nigeria’s Commonwealth Swimming Campaign Ends In Glasgow

Nigeria’s swimming sensation, Abduljabar Adama, narrowly missed out on a place in the medal race at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after finishing sixth in the men’s 50m freestyle semi-final on Saturday evening.

Adama clocked 22.44 seconds in Semi-final 2, bringing his impressive campaign in Glasgow to an end after he had earlier made history as the only Nigerian swimmer to advance to the semi-final stage of the event.

Australia’s Jamie Jack won the semi-final in 21.55 seconds, while Canada’s Joshua Liendo finished second in 21.61 seconds. Another Australian, Flynn Southam, was third in 21.86 seconds.

Singapore’s Mikkel Jun Jie Lee placed fourth in 22.25 seconds, with the Bahamas’ Lamar Taylor fifth in 22.30 seconds, just 0.14 seconds ahead of Adama.

Although the result ended his hopes of reaching the final and challenging for a medal, Adama’s performance represents a significant milestone for Nigerian swimming at the Commonwealth Games.

The young sprinter had earlier progressed from the heats to secure his place in the semi-finals, becoming the sole Nigerian swimmer to make it through after teammate Clinton Opute was eliminated in the preliminary round.

His achievement is particularly noteworthy given the strength of the field, with the 50m freestyle regarded as one of the most fiercely contested sprint events on the Commonwealth Games programme.

Adama arrived in Glasgow with an impressive reputation as an African junior record holder and further enhanced his credentials by breaking into the final 16 of the competition.

Despite falling short of the medal race, his performance has provided encouragement for Nigerian swimming and underlined his potential to compete at the highest level as he continues his development.

The experience of racing against some of the fastest swimmers in the Commonwealth is also expected to prove valuable to Adama as he targets further success on the international stage.

Adama’s exit brings Nigeria’s swimming campaign in Glasgow to a close, although Team Nigeria’s impressive showing continues to be driven by a strong performance in para powerlifting.

The Nigerian swimmer left the pool to warm applause following his spirited semi-final display, with his Glasgow outing offering another positive sign of the emergence of a new generation of Nigerian swimmers capable of making an impact on the international stage.
