Amusan Settles For Commonwealth Bronze As Bid For Historic 3rd Straight Title Ends In Glasgow
Nigeria’s world 100m hurdles record holder, Tobi Amusan, claimed the bronze medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Thursday, bringing her remarkable run as Commonwealth champion to an end.
Amusan, who won successive gold medals at the Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022 Games, had been chasing an unprecedented third consecutive Commonwealth title but finished third in the final in 12.60 seconds.
The gold medal was won by Devynne Charlton, who produced a winning time of 12.33 seconds, while Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds took silver in 12.41 seconds.
The Nigerian had entered the final as the favourite after producing a sensational display in the heats earlier in the day, clocking a wind-assisted 12.19 seconds to win her race. Although the time was not eligible for record purposes because of excessive wind assistance, it was the fastest performance ever recorded at the Commonwealth Games under any conditions.
However, Amusan was unable to reproduce that blistering pace in the final and had to settle for the bronze medal.
Despite missing out on a historic third consecutive gold, the 29-year-old once again demonstrated her consistency on the international stage by extending her impressive Commonwealth Games record to three successive podium finishes.
Her latest medal also strengthened Team Nigeria’s campaign in Glasgow, adding to the country’s growing haul as the athletics programme entered its closing stages.
Amusan remains one of Nigeria’s most decorated athletes, having dominated the Commonwealth Games over the past eight years with back-to-back titles before adding bronze to her collection in Glasgow.
