The African National Congress (ANC) in the eThekwini region has expressed shock at the murder of its councillor in Ward 17 in Klaarwater, west of Durban.

Sbusiso Cedric “Khekhe” Khwela was gunned down by a suspect while assisting people in his office.

Police have now launched a manhunt.

ANC eThekwini Region Convenor Thabani Nyawose and other leaders met with the family who are still at the scene.

Nyawose says the motive for the killing is unknown.

“The painful thing is that he died while he was in the office, while he was serving the people. He normally serves in Ward 17. He was a very disciplined counsellor, if I may speak in my capacity as a speaker of the council. It is painful that at the end of our term, at the end of our five years, we are losing a counsellor before the 4th of November. But we hope that the police will investigate and give us a report that is positive, of this criminal being arrested.”

Nyawose says the party is placing its trust in the police investigation and will await the outcome of the investigation before drawing any conclusions about the motive behind the killing.

“Even the members of the family, they didn’t share anything with us that can make councellor Khwela to be assassinated. But police will investigate and find out the truth, whether his assassination is linked to politics, or to the work that he’s doing in the community, or there are other reasons. Hence we are saying we hope that police will find out the truth and share with the members of the public on what’s led to his assassination,” says Nyawose.
