Angola: Motorcycle pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Muxima
The Diocese of Viana is preparing, on 2 September, a special pilgrimage for motorcyclists to the shrine dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, popularly known as Mama Muxima. The local Church hopes that the event will also raise awareness of road safety issues prevalent on most Angolan roads. The official days for the annual pilgrimage to the shrine are 3 – 6 September 2026.

This initiative is part of the larger celebration of the public expression of faith, taking place at the Sanctuary of Mama Muxima from 3 to 6 September 2026, under the motto: “Mama Muxima, Kind Mother and Model of Holiness, Pray for Us.”
Blessing and pilgrimage
The Bishop of Viana Diocese, Bishop Emílio Sumbelelo, is concerned about the growing problem of road accidents in Angola, particularly those involving motorcycles, which daily leave families devastated by loss, pain, and the physical and psychological consequences for the injured.
By calling motorcyclists to a pilgrimage and blessing, the Church intends to create space for prayer, reflection, and awareness of safety and the sacredness of life, said the Diocese’ spokesperson, Father Queirós Figueira.
Motorcycle taxis serve as a vital mode of transport and courier services in Viana and the greater Luanda city area, helping residents navigate heavy traffic congestion.

Faith and responsibility
Motorcyclists have praised the Viana local Church’s initiative, called for greater participation, and say they are ready for the pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Mama Muxima.
By placing the spiritual dimension at the centre of motorcyclists, the Church does not aim to present the blessing and pilgrimage as a guarantee against accidents but as a gesture of faith, surrender, and commitment to life. The whole event is an invitation to focus responsibility on every trip: respecting the Highway Code, avoiding excessive speed, not riding or driving under the influence of alcohol, using protective safety gear and adopting a cautious attitude towards other road users.
According to data from the Angola’s Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety, between January and June 2026, Angola recorded 6,135 road accidents, resulting in 1,576 deaths and 4,559 injuries.
