The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress for the 2027 election, Atiku Abubakar, has sympathised with residents affected by flooding in Lagos State.

In a statement posted on his X handle on Tuesday, Atiku expressed concern over the impact of the flooding on families, commuters, motorists and business owners.

“I extend my heartfelt sympathy to the people of Lagos who have been affected by the ongoing flooding. My thoughts are with the families, motorists, commuters, business owners and everyone whose lives and livelihoods were disrupted by this unfortunate event,” he said.

The former vice president said the incident underscored the need for solidarity during difficult times.

He also prayed for the safety of those affected and a quick return to normalcy.

“At moments like this, we are reminded of the strength of our shared humanity and the importance of standing together in support of one another.

“I pray for the safety of all, for a swift return to normalcy,” Atiku added.

The message comes as parts of Lagos, including areas such as Gbagada, Iyana Ipaja, Ikorodu Road, Ikeja, Maryland, Mushin, Ogudu, Lekki, Oshodi, Agege, Alimosho and Obalende, experienced flash flooding from torrential rains that began on Sunday.

The flooding extended to sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Apapa-Oshodi Expressway and Lekki-Epe Expressway, worsening traffic congestion across the state.

Authorities have linked the disruption to overwhelmed drainage systems amid seasonal downpours.
