South Africa’s historic and heroic journey at the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the Americas has come to a heartbreaking end.
It took co-hosts Canada 90 minutes to unlock the Bafana Bafana defence and break the deadlock when Stephen Eustaquio scored the only goal of their round of 32 match in Los Angeles on Sunday night.
Both teams played in their first ever knock-out match at a FIFA World Cup and there was very little to choose between the two sides.

Both had opportunities earlier in the match, but either missed the target or were denied by resolute defence.
In the end, the Canucks march and will play the Netherlands or Morocco in the round of 16 in Houston on Saturday.
For Bafana who exceeded expectations, it’s the long journey home where they will receive a heroes’ welcome, despite defeat in Los Angeles.
