The City of Johannesburg has ramped up by-law enforcement in the inner city, targeting illegal street trading as part of a high-impact service delivery operation aimed at restoring order and improving compliance.
Leading the operation, Joburg Mayor Dada Morero, accompanied by Members of the Mayoral Committee and senior city officials, are inspecting informal traders.
Several traders found operating without valid permits have been instructed to leave, while others are required to provide their details for permit verification.
Morero says traders allocated legal trading spaces are expected to comply with the city’s by-laws, warning that enforcement efforts will continue.
“As you saw, it was one individual researchers applied, so the team took care of all details to find out what has happened. We saw those that have been approved; they were allocated, but they moved from an allocated site to an illegal site. It’s a question of misbehaviour and misconduct on the side of those that are trading, because they have to comply to the bylaws.”
“Because we have given them space, we have given them their smart card, but still they went to trade in a place that is not designated for trading. So that is why we must constantly be on the ground to ensure that compliance with the bylaw is observed,” adds Morero.
