Coach Hugo Broos hails unity behind South Africa’s World Cup surge

South Africa heads into Sunday’s FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash against Canada chasing yet another piece of history, with head coach Hugo Broos insisting that the team’s remarkable rise has been built as much on trust and unity as on tactical discipline.

Bafana Bafana have already broken new ground by reaching the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time, having recovered from an opening 2-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico. Broos’ side now stands just one victory away from an unprecedented place in the last 16, but the veteran Belgian believes the strong bond within the squad has been the foundation of South Africa’s success. Addressing reporters ahead of Sunday’s showdown with Canada, Broos highlighted the unique relationship he has cultivated with his players since taking charge in 2021.

“Between me as a coach and them as players is maybe something unique. I’m the coach, but I’m not just a coach. I think I’m a friend of theirs. So the relationship between the players and me is very good.”

That sense of togetherness has been on display throughout Bafana Bafana’s campaign, with the players showing determination, discipline, and unwavering commitment to one another in subsequent games despite criticism following their opening defeat.

Broos believes those qualities will once again be crucial against a Canadian side also enjoying its best-ever run at the World Cup. “I just know that the players will be ready again and will try to achieve the third round,” he said.

“This should be even more historic. Those players are chasing these things. Those players want to prove to everyone and show that they are a good team. We will see on Sunday if we can go further.”

A victory over Canada would not only keep South Africa’s dream alive but also establish a new benchmark in the nation’s football history, further cementing Bafana Bafana’s status as one of Africa’s standout performers at the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup.
