The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s determination to eradicate terrorism from Nigeria, declaring that authorities would “fight with every inch of our blood” to guarantee the safety of all citizens.
Fagbemi made the declaration on Friday after the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced a Boko Haram member, Alkali Yarima, also known as La’ari, to death by hanging for his role in the 2015 terrorist attacks on Maiduguri, Borno State.
Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment after finding Yarima guilty on a seven-count terrorism charge filed by the Federal Government.
The court sentenced the convict to death by hanging on count seven for participating in acts of terrorism during the 2015 Maiduguri attacks.
In addition to the death sentence, Justice Omotosho imposed a life sentence on Yarima on count six for receiving training in arms and weapon handling in preparation for committing acts of terrorism.
The judge also sentenced him to 35 years’ imprisonment on count one for professing membership of and continuing to belong to Boko Haram, a proscribed terrorist organisation. Yarima was further sentenced to 30 years in prison on count five and 10 years each on counts two, three, and four.
The charges, marked FHC/KNJ/CR/971/2026, were dated May 26 and filed on May 29 by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN.
According to the prosecution, Yarima, also known as La’ari, with chest number 1636 from the Lawanti area of Mafa Local Government Area of Borno State, belonged to Boko Haram between 2009 and 2015 before his arrest.
The Federal Government accused him of participating in the 2015 attacks on Maiduguri, an offence punishable under Section 2(1) of the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act, 2013..
Fagbemi, who personally led the Federal Government’s prosecution team, described the conviction as another demonstration of the government’s resolve to ensure that terrorists are brought to justice.
“We will fight with every inch of our blood to ensure that we make Nigeria a safe place for everybody,” the Attorney-General said.
