Edo hospital acquires IVF equipment, expands fertility care

The management of the Edo Specialist Hospital, Benin City, on Monday announced the acquisition of in vitro fertilisation equipment to support couples experiencing infertility.
Speaking at a press conference at the hospital, the Chief Medical Director, Dr Anthonia Njoku, commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for approving the purchase of the equipment, describing it as a major boost to healthcare delivery in the state.
The briefing was held alongside a media tour organised to mark the hospital’s seventh anniversary.
Njoku said the acquisition would expand access to reproductive healthcare and provide renewed hope for couples struggling with infertility.
“In reproductive healthcare, many couples who have difficulty conceiving will now receive assistance through the IVF programme.
“We commend the governor for approving the purchase of the IVF equipment, which demonstrates his commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery across Edo State,” she said.
The CMD also announced that the hospital’s residency training programme in Obstetrics and Gynaecology had received full accreditation from the West African College of Surgeons and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
She added that the hospital recently secured accreditation for its Family Medicine and Dentistry departments.
Njoku attributed the institution’s progress to the support of the state government, noting that the administration had strengthened healthcare services across the primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
According to her, the governor approved the absorption of 126 contract workers into the Edo State civil service and authorised the recruitment of additional medical personnel, resulting in over 290 direct jobs.
She further disclosed that the hospital had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mudiame University, Irrua, to serve as a teaching hospital for the training of medical students.
“The partnership strengthens our role as both a healthcare provider and a training institution,” she said.
Njoku also revealed that the hospital now offers comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care services to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes.
She added that the hospital had been enrolled on the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme and the National Health Insurance Authority platforms, enabling it to provide services to beneficiaries of both state and federal health insurance programmes.
The event concluded with a guided tour of the hospital’s facilities led by Dr Suleman Ozemoka and other officials, giving journalists the opportunity to inspect the equipment and services available at the institution.
