Correctional centres are institutions designed to focus on the rehabilitation, psychological well-being, and skill development of inmates, rather than just punishment.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo said this in Abuja at the 2026 African Correctional Services Association (ACSA ) Regional Conference on Prisoner Classification and the Use of Technology in Prisons in Africa.
The conference is targeted at reinforcing Africa’s collective commitment to building correctional systems that uphold human dignity, enhance institutional security and support the successful rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders through innovation, collaboration and adherence to international standards.
The Minister called for stronger information sharing among law enforcement agencies within countries and across borders to deny criminals of one country from seeking refuge in another.
Chairman of the African Correctional Services Association (ACSA) and National Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services, South Africa, emphasized the importance of technology in modern offender management through digital case management systems, biometric identification and improved correctional operations.
The conference brought together Heads of Correctional Services, policymakers, correctional experts, development partners and delegates from eleven African countries to deliberate on innovative strategies for improving prisoner classification, advancing the responsible use of technology in correctional administration and strengthening regional cooperation in prison reforms.
