FG unveils projects at UBTH, expands access to quality care

The Federal Government on Tuesday unveiled several projects at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital as part of efforts to expand access to quality healthcare services at the tertiary health institution.

The projects were commissioned by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Daju Kachollom, represented by the Medical Director of the National Orthopedic Hospital, Benin.

Kachollom commended the UBTH Chief Medical Director, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, for her visionary leadership and commitment to advancing quality healthcare in Nigeria.

Speaking during the ceremony, the UBTH CMD said the projects are to enhance the hospital’s ability to provide specialised medical services and create a better environment for patients and healthcare workers.

She stressed that sustained investment in medical infrastructure and services was essential to providing Nigerians with accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare.

Ize-Iyamu said, “While the hospital has existed for over 50 years, many of its structures and facilities have fallen into deplorable conditions, making infrastructural upgrades essential.”

The projects commissioned include a modern police post, an expanded Accident and Emergency waiting area, a sophisticated mortuary complex, a Multi-Faith Centre, and a specialized Renal Premium Ward.

Others are a newly established gas plant, a geriatric library and lounge, a state-of-the-art 160-slice CT scan facility housed within radiology, and a dedicated Special Investigation Unit.

Also, a contemporary dentistry complex, an advanced oncology center, and an adjacent pantry linked to the main operating theater were unveiled during the ceremony.
