Over 40,000 undocumented foreign nationals have been arrested since January of this year for contravening the Immigration Act. This is according to the Chairperson of Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration and Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi.

Kubayi revealed this during a committee briefing in Pretoria, outlining the actions announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his address on migration last week.

Kubayi explains, “In the past month alone, more than 7,400 illegal immigrants have been arrested by the SAPS for contravening the Immigration Act. Since the 1st of January 2026, law enforcement operations conducted across the country have resulted in the arrest of more than 40,000 illegal immigrants. This is a demonstration that the government is not turning a blind eye to illegal immigration.”
