UN Climate Change Executive Secretary, Simon Stiell, has described the catastrophic glacial collapse and flooding in the Himalayan region as a heartbreaking reminder of the growing vulnerability of mountain communities to climate change, as rescue teams continue searching for thousands of people missing in Nepal and Tibet.
The disaster, triggered by a suspected glacial collapse high in the Himalayas last week, has unleashed devastating flash floods across the Nepal-China border region, sweeping away communities, roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure.

Latest reports indicate that more than 900 people have been confirmed dead, while nearly 5,000 others remain missing as rescue operations enter a critical phase. Hundreds of workers are feared trapped in tunnels at hydropower projects in Nepal’s Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, where floodwaters, mud and debris have severely hampered rescue efforts.
The catastrophe began when a massive collapse involving glacier ice, rock and debris sent a destructive torrent down mountain valleys and river systems along the Nepal-Tibet border. Entire settlements were overwhelmed, while critical transport links and energy infrastructure were destroyed.
Rescuers from Nepal, supported by teams and expertise from neighbouring China and India, are racing against time to reach survivors. However, unstable weather, deep mud, rising rivers and the continuing risk of landslides and further flooding have complicated operations. More than 10,000 people have reportedly been rescued but hopes of finding survivors are diminishing as the scale of the devastation becomes clearer.
Reacting to the tragedy, Stiell expressed condolences to families who have lost loved ones and warned that the disaster underscored the growing climate vulnerability of the Hindu Kush Himalayan region.
“The catastrophic glacial collapse in the Himalayan region, with so many lives lost in an instant, is absolutely heartbreaking. My thoughts are with everyone affected, especially those who have lost loved ones,” he said.
Stiell said the sudden glacial collapse and flash flood were a devastating reminder of the fragility of mountain environments, particularly across the Hindu Kush Himalayas.
“For years, scientists and local communities have been warning that the Hindu Kush Himalayas are at huge risk from climate change,” he said.
The Himalayan disaster has renewed global concern about the accelerating impact of rising temperatures on glaciers and mountain ecosystems. Scientists have warned that warming temperatures are contributing to glacier retreat and the destabilisation of ice and surrounding mountain terrain, increasing the risks of avalanches, landslides and destructive floods for communities downstream.
Stiell linked the growing frequency and severity of such disasters to continued global dependence on fossil fuels.
“We also know a warming climate, driven by humanity burning colossal amounts of coal, oil and gas, is making tragedies like this one, and so many others around the world, much more likely, frequent and severe, with vulnerable communities often hardest hit,” he said.
The disaster has also exposed the vulnerability of rapidly expanding infrastructure in the Himalayan region. At least a dozen hydropower facilities were affected by the floods, with hundreds of workers reported missing or trapped in tunnels, highlighting the growing challenges of development in fragile mountain environments exposed to increasingly volatile climate and geological risks.

While investigations into the precise chain of events that triggered the collapse continue, authorities and scientists have warned of continuing dangers from debris-dammed lakes, unstable slopes and the possibility of further flooding.
For Stiell, however, the tragedy also reinforces the urgency of accelerating global climate action.
“But the solutions to global heating are equally clear – especially a faster global shift from fossil fuels to renewables and more investment in climate resilience,” he said.
His comments come as vulnerable mountain communities across Asia face growing risks associated with melting glaciers and changing weather patterns. The Hindu Kush Himalayan region, often described as a critical water source for hundreds of millions of people, is increasingly exposed to the cascading impacts of glacier loss, extreme rainfall, landslides and glacial lake outburst floods.
As rescue operations continue and the full human cost of the latest Himalayan catastrophe emerges, the disaster is likely to intensify calls for stronger climate adaptation measures, improved early-warning systems, cross-border cooperation and faster global action to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
For communities living beneath some of the world’s most fragile mountain ecosystems, the tragedy has once again demonstrated that the consequences of a warming planet are no longer a distant threat but an unfolding reality.
