‘I think Pope Leo truly cares about young Catholics’

“We are really proud to have the Pope visit our city. Metz isn’t well-known to many people, but it is a deeply significant city for Europe. That is precisely why the Pope is coming here.”

In an interview with Vatican News in Metz, Henry, 28, who works in corporate sales, expressed the eastern French city’s delight at welcoming Pope Leo XIV to the city associated with the life of Venerable Robert Schuman, one of the founding fathers of a united Europe.

“I’m sure the Holy Father will speak about peace in Europe and across the world,” the young professional said. “I hope his words will help us understand how we can bring peace to the world.”

Henry also reflected on the growing interest in the Catholic faith among the younger generation.

“I’m a young Catholic myself, and I have many friends who are catechumens—young people who are new to the Catholic faith.”

Henry suggested this represents well the kind of Catholic community they have in Metz.

“The people I know possess a very deep, vibrant faith. It’s wonderful to see, and it feels quite different from other communities.”

That is why, Henry insists, receiving the Pope here is so incredibly important to them.

“I really appreciate this Pope. He speaks French, he speaks Spanish—he communicates with everyone. I think he truly cares about young Catholics.”

Speaking outside the iconic St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Henry added that Metz is an underestimated treasure.

“We have a remarkably beautiful cathedral, and I think everyone should come visit it. The city itself is beautiful. It completely defies expectations.”

Henry expressed his delight that his family could be present with him in Metz during Pope Leo’s visit, during which he will make history in the city when he celebrates Mass at that beloved Cathredral.
