A subplot from Barcelona’s 5-0 drubbing of Elche to kick-start their LALIGA campaign features a tribute to NBA great Kobe Bryant.

Barcelona opened their 2026/27 LALIGA title defence in spectacular fashion by debuting their Kobe Bryant-inspired third kit during a 5-0 road demolition of Elche.

The emphatic victory at the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero on Sunday, August 23, aligned with what would have been the late basketball legend’s 48th birthday.

Hansi Flick’s squad delivered a relentless performance that beautifully encapsulated the famous Mamba Mentality celebrated by the new uniform.

The historic Nike collaboration officially replaces the traditional Swoosh with Bryant’s iconic “Sheath” logo on the right side of the chest.

The jersey features a textured snake-skin print that fades from deep black into an intense field purple, mirroring the Los Angeles Lakers’ colours Bryant made globally famous.

Gold accents and an iridescent Barcelona crest further symbolise the uncompromising pursuit of championship excellence.

The most poignant detail remains hidden inside the collar, which bears a timeless Bryant quote: “Leave the game better than you found it.”

Choosing August 23 to debut the striking uniform added immense emotional weight to the opening match.

Barcelona honoured Bryant by overwhelming Elche on the pitch to kick-start their pursuit of a third consecutive league crown.

Raphinha set the tone early for the Catalan side, winning a penalty in the 14th minute before confidently converting the spot-kick to open the floodgates.

Historic ties to Catalonia

Bryant held a well-documented and enduring bond with the Catalan giants throughout his illustrious career.

The five-time NBA champion was a football fan and regularly attended Barcelona training sessions during their summer tours in the United States.

His relationship with the club famously peaked when Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho introduced him to a teenage Lionel Messi.

Ronaldinho accurately predicted to a baffled Bryant that the young Argentine would eventually become the greatest player in the history of the sport.
