Lagos inaugurates committee for 2026 World Habitat Day celebration – EnviroNews

The Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development has inaugurated the 2026 World Habitat Day Planning Committee, charging its members to ensure successful delivery of the annual event.
The Permanent Secretary, Office of Physical Planning, Lagos State, Mr. Olayinka Wasiu, made this known in a statement on Wednesday, July 22, in Ikeja.
Wasiu said the annual observance, marked on the first Monday of every October, provided an opportunity to reflect on the state of human settlements and reaffirm the right of everyone to adequate shelter.
He said the theme of the 2026 edition, “Adequate Housing for All,” highlighted the need for stronger collaboration among governments, the private sector, development partners and other stakeholders to address housing challenges.
The permanent secretary urged members of the committee to carry out their responsibilities with professionalism, dedication and teamwork to ensure a successful celebration.
“I want you all to bring your expertise and contribute meaningfully before, during and after the programme because Lagos is widely regarded as the pacesetter of development in Nigeria,” he said.
Wasiu stressed the need for a comprehensive and sustainable approach to addressing housing deficit.
“Housing deficit is something we have to critically and holistically address in order to bridge the existing gap,” he said.
He noted that the office of physical planning was responsible for coordinating World Habitat Day celebration in Lagos State.
According to him, members of the planning committee were drawn from various Lagos State ministries, departments and agencies to ensure broad representation, inclusiveness and effective planning.
He said the 2026 World Habitat Day celebration would hold on Oct. 5 at the Blue Roof, Lagos Television Complex, Agidingbi, Ikeja.
He said that Lagos State Government remained committed to implementing policies and initiatives that would promote sustainable urban development, expand access to adequate housing, and improve quality of life of residents.
