LASUTH defends digitalisation drive amid patients’ records concerns

The Chief Medical Director of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Prof Adetokunbo Fabamwo, has said the hospital’s digital transformation programme is progressing as planned, with the next phase of implementation expected to commence within the next few weeks.
Fabamwo said this in a statement on Thursday while responding to concerns over delayed medical consultations and reports that patients’ case files were still being moved manually, with large bags of folders occupying parts of the records section.
He explained that the digitalisation project was being implemented in phases to ensure efficiency, sustainability and minimal disruption to patient care.
According to him, the first phase had been completed in the Family Medicine and Ophthalmology departments, where electronic systems are already being used to improve patient care, medical records management and service delivery.
Fabamwo added that the hospital’s Accounts Department had also been fully digitalised, resulting in improved financial processes, transparency and operational efficiency.
He said, “The process of digitalising LASUTH has already commenced and is progressing in a carefully planned, phased manner to ensure efficiency, sustainability and minimal disruption to patient care.
“As part of the first phase, the Family Medicine and Ophthalmology departments have already been successfully digitalised and are operating with electronic systems that enhance patient care, record management and service delivery.
“In addition, the Accounts Department has been fully digitalised, significantly improving financial processes, transparency and operational efficiency.”
The Chief Medical Director said the next phase would extend the deployment of electronic medical records and other digital solutions to additional clinical and administrative departments across the hospital.
“The next phase of the hospital-wide digitalisation programme is scheduled to commence within the next few weeks. This phase will expand the deployment of electronic medical records and other digital solutions to additional clinical and administrative departments,” he added.
Fabamwo reiterated the hospital’s commitment to achieving full digital transformation in line with global best practices and the Lagos State Government’s vision of providing efficient, patient-centred and technology-driven healthcare services.
He appreciated patients, staff and the public for their patience and support as the transformation continues.
