LAWMA warns residents against street dumping of waste – EnviroNews

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has warned residents against dumping refuse on streets, roadsides, medians, drains and other open spaces, saying such locations are not designated waste disposal sites.

The warning was contained in a statement posted on the authority’s official X handle on Monday, July 6, 2026.

LAWMA said indiscriminate waste disposal remained a major cause of environmental degradation, posing serious risks to public health and the environment.

It said illegal dumping blocked drainage channels, attracted disease-carrying pests, defaced the environment and increased the risk of flooding.

The authority urged residents to dispose of waste only through approved channels, stressing that responsible waste management begins with proper handling of household refuse.

It advised households to store their waste appropriately and hand it over to their assigned Private Sector Participation waste operators for collection and disposal.

LAWMA also encouraged residents to separate recyclable materials where possible, noting that recycling supports environmental sustainability and reduces the volume of waste sent to disposal sites.

The authority said that while dumping refuse on the streets might appear convenient, its long-term consequences affected public health and the environment.

It reiterated its call on residents to embrace responsible waste disposal practices to promote a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Lagos.
