Lawmakers Overhaul Niger State Magistrates Court System in New Bill

Niger State House of Assembly has passed a bill that will guide the establishment and administration of the Magistrates Court system in the State.

The legislation, to be known as the Niger State Magistrates’ Courts Law, 2026, when signed into law by Governor Umar Bago aims to strengthen the administration of justice and improve the judicial system across the State.

The bill was passed following the presentation and adoption of the report of the Assembly Standing Committee on Judiciary and Legal Matters.

Presenting the report on behalf of the Committee Chairman, Abdulrahman Gambo, the Vice Chairman, Abubakar Suleiman, stated that the bill provides a comprehensive legal framework for the establishment, classification, appointment, jurisdiction, and administration of Magistrates’ Courts across the State.

The Committee recommended further amendments relating to pension contributions, the jurisdiction and powers of Magistrates’ Courts, sentencing, fines, custodial sentences, community service, and the imposition of consecutive or concurrent sentences to improve clarity, consistency, and ensure the effective implementation of the new law.

Following extensive deliberations, the Assembly unanimously adopted all the committee’s recommendations and subsequently passed the bill with the Speaker directing the Clerk, Farouq Isah, to prepare and transmit a clean copy of the bill to the executive for the Governor’s assent.
