Hundreds of energy efficient lights have been installed at Loughborough Town Hall as part of the venue’s drive to reduce its carbon emissions.
Over 400 non-LED fixtures have been replaced in the venue’s main foyer, gallery, conference rooms and public areas, with added professional stage lighting also being replaced in the main auditorium.
These replacements are expected to reduce the Town Hall’s carbon footprint by 29.85 tonnes per annum, alongside an average energy reduction of 65%.
Many of the stage fixtures replaced were between 20 and 45 years old, enabling the venue to benefit from improved energy efficiency while also increasing the range and quality of technical support across its programme.
Cllr Beverley Gray, the Council’s Lead Member for Climate Action and Net Zero, said: “It is fantastic to see the new lighting installed at Loughborough Town Hall to continue to make the venue energy efficient.
“We are determined to reduce emissions across the whole borough, whether that is in our buildings, by installing electric vehicle charging points in our car parks or just by encouraging our residents to look towards a greener way of living.”
Cllr Anne Gray, the Council’s Lead Member for Open Spaces and Leisure Facilities, said: “We continue to invest in our leisure facilities across Charnwood and it is important that we do so to keep them running effectively and efficiently, while cutting costs.
“I’m really pleased to see the new lights installed to cut carbon emissions. They will also give visitors a better experience with the lights being more powerful and clearer.”
The total cost of the project is £133,000 with the return of investment expected in around three and half years.
In 2024, 30 LED house lights and 48 LED stage lights were fitted in the main auditorium.
Charnwood Borough Council declared a climate emergency in November 2023 and committed to working with partners and communities to reduce carbon emissions and help limit global warming.
Loughborough Town Hall is a multi-award-winning professional theatre, gallery and event venue, originally built in the 1850s as a corn exchange and ballroom. It became a performance venue in the mid-1970s and welcomes over 100,000 visitors through its door each year.
