Lula launches re-election bid, vows to defend Brazil’s sovereignty

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has launched his campaign for October’s presidential election, presenting himself as an experienced leader capable of steering the country through global uncertainty.

The 80-year-old president formally launched his candidacy at the Workers’ Party (PT) convention in Sao Paulo.

Lula urged greater investment in defence and stressed the need to protect Brazil’s sovereignty amid trade and diplomatic tensions with the United States.

“I want to be prepared so that no one invades this country,” he said.

The former metalworker and union leader is seeking a fourth and final term in office after returning to power three years ago.

Regional challenges

Former finance minister Fernando Haddad, who is running for governor of Sao Paulo state, described Lula as an experienced leader at a time of global instability.

“The world is in turmoil. Today, we face wars and the rise of the far right. In times of rough seas like these, you need a reliable, experienced sailor,” Haddad said.
