Mozambique: Cathedral of Beira hosts Day for Catechists
Over the weekend, the Archdiocese of Beira in Mozambique hosted catechists of the diocese for Catechist Day. The Mass was presided over by Bishop Antonio Manuel Bogaio Constantino, M.C.C.I. He is the Bishop of Caia Diocese and the Apostolic Administrator of Beira. Several priests concelebrated.

The Eucharistic celebration and day’s event were part of the 5th National Catechetical Week (V Semana Nacional de Catequese), a nationwide commemoration established by the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique (CEM).
In his homily, Bishop Constantino explained that a catechist is not someone who transmits religious knowledge; rather, they are witnesses of Christ. Therefore, they must proclaim the Church’s faith, not their personal opinions. They witness to the faith by their lives.
The special Eucharist coincided with the Church’s commemoration of the martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist. The feast of St. John the Baptist is closely tied to catechists because his entire life and mission served as an example that pointed others to Christ.

Ministry and not a profession
Like Saint John the Baptist, the catechist should be a servant of the truth, the Mozambican prelate emphasised. At the end of his homily, Bishop Constantino encouraged the catechists in their mission. He reminded them that theirs was a ministry and not a profession.
A public lecture also marked the celebration of Catechist Day in the Archdiocese of Beira. Father Aly do Rosário introduced the new National Directory for Catechesis (Novo Diretório Nacional de Catequese). He too spoke about the catechist’s noble mission.
Later, there was a moment of fellowship among the catechists.
