Mozart concert by ‘Bella Musica’ to be broadcast on Vatican Radio

Tune in to Vatican Radio at 10 p.m. CET to hear a recording of this unique concert, performed in the Vatican’s Sala Assunta under conductor Stefan David Hummel.

The programme features two violins once owned and played by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The concert opens with the overture to Mozart’s opera Così fan tutte (K. 588).

Ten-year-old Shuxuan Jin then performs the first movement of Mozart’s Violin Concerto in G major (K. 216), playing the composer’s childhood violin as soloist.

This is followed by the third movement of the Violin Concerto in A major (K. 219), performed by 19-year-old Ida Gillesberger on Mozart’s “Costa” violin.

The only work on the programme not composed by Mozart is Francisco Tárrega’s Recuerdos de la Alhambra, a celebrated work for solo guitar.

The ensemble then performs the fourth movement of Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 in C major (K. 551), better known as the “Jupiter Symphony”.

The concert concludes with an encore: Mozart’s motet Ave verum corpus (K. 618), performed by a choir formed by members of the ensemble.
