Nurses seek partnership as FG inaugurates new NMCN board

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives-Federal Health Institutions has congratulated the newly inaugurated Board of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, expressing readiness to partner with the board to advance the interests of nurses, midwives, and the country’s healthcare system.

The 21-member board was inaugurated on Thursday by the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, in Abuja.

Dr. Alice Ogundele from the Department of Nursing Sciences, Elizade University, Ondo State, would serve as the NMCN chairman.

Members include the Director of Nursing Services, Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Mrs Umah Imaobong, the National President, NANNM, Haruna Mamman, the NANM General Secretary, Comrade T.A. Shettima, and the DNS, Ministry of Health, Ogun State, Dr. Serifat Omobolanle Aminu.

Others are the DNS, Ministry of Health, Enugu State, Dr. Okoh Joy Oge, DNS, Ministry of Health, Bayelsa State, Mrs Addy Onajomi, DNS, Ministry of Health, Plateau State, Mr. Chinke Gondam Senji, DNS, Ministry of Health, Yobe State, Alh. Bala Sule, and DNS, Ministry of Health, Sokoto State, Alhaji Abubakar Shehu.

The Dean, Faculty of Allied Health Science, Bayero University, Kano State. Prof. Saleh Garba Ngaski, the Head, Department of Nursing Sciences, Osun State University, Osogbo, Osun State, Dr. Kamoru Adesina, and HNS, Federal Medical Centre Misua, Bauchi State, Alh. Mohammed Aminu Adamu are part of the NMCN members.

Others include the Provost, College of Nursing Sciences, Gombe State, Dr. Paulina Doka, the Provost, College of Nursing, Ibadan, Oyo State, Dr. Gbonjubola Owolabi, the Head of Training, Post Basic Programme (Ophthalmic) University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Kwara State, Mrs Khadijat Shuaibu, AIG Umar Faruk Madaki, Alh Muktar Gidado Abdulkadir, Dr. Esther Ahmed, and Dr. Safiyya Usman.

While reacting in a statement signed by the National Secretary of NANNM-FHI, Enya Osinachi, on Thursday, the nurses said the inauguration of the board marks a significant milestone for the nursing and midwifery professions and would strengthen governance, regulation and professional practice across the country.

“The inauguration of the Board is a remarkable milestone and a welcome development for the nursing and midwifery professions in Nigeria. We are delighted to witness this significant step toward strengthening the governance, regulation, and advancement of nursing and midwifery practice in the country,” the statement read in part.

The association also commended the Federal Government for constituting and inaugurating the board, describing the move as a demonstration of its commitment to strengthening the nation’s healthcare sector.

The nurses further applauded the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Ali Pate, for facilitating the inauguration and for supporting policies and initiatives aimed at promoting professional excellence within the health sector.

NANNM-FHI also expressed appreciation to the NMCN Registrar and Chief Executive Officer for providing leadership during the period the council operated without a governing board.

According to the association, the Registrar demonstrated dedication and resilience in steering the affairs of the council and advancing the nursing and midwifery professions throughout the prolonged period.
The nurses added, “As the newly inaugurated Board begins its tenure, we pray for wisdom, unity of purpose, and success in providing strategic leadership that will enhance professional standards, strengthen regulation, and contribute to improved healthcare delivery for all Nigerians.”

The association said it was optimistic that the new board would provide strategic leadership capable of strengthening professional standards and improving healthcare delivery across the country.

It added that collaboration among stakeholders would be essential to advancing nursing and midwifery practice and supporting broader health sector reforms.

“NANNM-FHI looks forward to a productive partnership in advancing the interests of nurses, midwives, and the healthcare system in Nigeria,” it said.
