Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo has urged the new leadership of the Edo State House of Assembly to embrace humility, unity, transparency and teamwork, while putting aside personal differences and prioritising the interests of the people.

The Governor gave the charge when he received the newly elected Speaker of the Assembly, Yekini Idiaye, representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, who has taken over the speakership from Blessing Agbebaku

He advised members to settle disagreements within the Assembly rather than taking them to social media, while charging the new Speaker to carry all lawmakers along and work collectively for the development of Edo State.

The new Speaker, Yekini Idiaye, representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, said the leadership of the Assembly visited the Governor to formally introduce itself and reaffirm the legislature’s support for the administration’s development agenda.

Idiaye succeeds Blessing Agbebaku who resigned as Speaker on Monday amid reports of a possible impeachment.

Since the beginning of the current democratic dispensation in 1999, the Edo State House of Assembly has had 15 Speakers, with Uyi Igbe, who served from 2010 to 2015, being the only Speaker to complete a full four-year tenure.

The tenure of the other 14 Speakers was cut short at different times, largely amid political crises, leadership changes and impeachment proceedings.
