PGA Tour record for most birdies to open a round? Sahith Theegala starts out hot, ties mark
A week after Michael Brennan threatened to tie the PGA Tour’s record for most consecutive made birdies in a round, Sahith Theegala challenged — and eventually tied — the mark for most birdies to open a round by carding six consecutive circles to start his Wyndham Championship.
Theegala’s attempt at the record seventh straight birdie came at the par-3 seventh, where he bogeyed to fall back to 5 under through seven holes. He did respond with a pair of birdies to finish off the front nine, carding a 28 to put himself officially on sub-60 watch at the Tour’s regular-season finale.
“You don’t really get in that zone too often; you try to prepare yourself to be in that zone as much as possible, but realistically, I think guys out here will say you’re only in that zone two, three, four times a year,” Theegala said after the round. “To turn that round into a 62 was really nice. There’s times where you play that well and still shoot 64, 65 which out here these guys are really, really good so you’ve got to really take advantage of the days your game is feeling great and the breaks are going your way, too.”
All that drama came within an hour after Beau Hossler signed his first-round 61 to become the clubhouse leader — the fifth such low score in three weeks.
Theegala went from spectacular to steady on his back nine, posting a 34 behind eight pars and a birdie at the par-4 18th — the circle that broke his “tale of two nines.”
“First time I ever started a round with six in a row, and it didn’t feel like a fluke or anything,” Theegala said.
“I got to the back nine and stopped hitting fairways and that cost me a lot of opportunities,” he added.
After putting together a 62, Theegala now trails Hossler by a shot heading into Friday’s second round at Sedgefield Country Club. He sits T-2 with Tour rookie Benjamin James, who eagled a pair of par-5s on Thursday on his way to a late 62.
Theegala, 28, has made 21 of 22 cuts in 2026 and sits No. 43 in the FedExCup standings ahead of next week’s playoff opener in Memphis.
“I got some nice rolls today,” he told Golf Channel’s Ryan Lavner.
Brennan, who made eight straight birdies at the Rocket Classic, fell one shy of tying the record for most consecutive birdies at any point during a PGA Tour round. Mark Calcavecchia (2009 RBC Canadian Open) and Kevin Chappell (2019 A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier) each recorded nine straight circles.
