An 18-seater commercial bus has reportedly suffered a brake failure and crashed into a shop at Challenge Market in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Saturday, sparking panic among traders and passers-by.
According to eyewitness accounts shared by Radio Kwana on its verified Facebook page, the bus veered off the road after its brakes failed, then rammed into the shop in the busy market.

Witnesses said a perimeter fence surrounding the area absorbed much of the impact, preventing the vehicle from plunging deeper into the crowded market.
“The fence served as a crucial protective barrier, significantly reducing the extent of the damage and safeguarding lives in the densely populated market area,” an eyewitness said.

The incident caused damage to property, but no fatalities were recorded as of the time of filing this report.
The near-tragedy has reignited concerns over the roadworthiness of commercial vehicles, with renewed calls for transport operators to prioritise routine vehicle maintenance, particularly brake systems, to prevent avoidable accidents.
