Four people alleged to be undocumented Mozambican nationals have been arrested in Mapetla, Soweto.
The arrests followed a gathering of community members outside a house where the suspects were believed to be staying, with residents calling on law enforcement authorities to intervene.
The arrests come amid a community-led campaign targeting properties suspected of accommodating undocumented migrants.
Community leader Kagiso Mvula says residents are relying on police to verify the immigration status of those identified.
He also expressed concern over what the community describes as delays by law enforcement in responding to their reports.
“People are actually harbouring illegal foreigners. Therefore, the community has been going from house to house to ensure that undocumented foreign nationals vacate. However, some house owners or landlords have given notice to those tenants to leave because they are afraid of a hefty fine of R10 000 and the possibility of arrest.”
