Pope receives the oversight commission of the ‘House for the Relief of Suffering’
During a meeting on 31 August at Castel Gandolfo, the oversight commission for the ‘House for the Relief of Suffering’ – a research hospital founded by St Pio of Pietrelcina – was able to share with Leo XIV the work it has done since it was established last May.

This morning, August 31, Pope Leo XIV received in an audience at the Apostolic Palace in Castel Gandolfo, the Commission for Direction and Oversight of the “Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza” (“House for the Relief of Suffering”) Foundation.
The “House for the Relief of Suffering” is a major healthcare center born from the dream of St. Pio of Pietrelcina in San Giovanni Rotondo, in southern Italy.
The Commission was established through a Chirograph signed by the Pope on 27 May 2026.
Present at Tuesday’s meeting were Commission President Maximino Caballero Ledo; Coordinator Fabio Gasperini; Monsignor Paolo Rudelli, Substitute for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State; Archbishop Giordano Piccinotti, President of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See (APSA); and Archbishop Giorgio Ferretti, Archbishop of Foggia-Bovino. The Commission’s secretary, Fabrizio Colaci, also attended.
The Commission’s work so far
During the meeting, the Pope was able to review the progress of the Commission’s work. Particular attention was given to an analysis of the Foundation’s economic and financial situation and to identifying the most appropriate solutions to ensure the long-term sustainability of its work, in light of the relaunching of the “Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza” Hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo.
The Commission presented the main priorities currently guiding its activities: stabilizing relations with staff; strengthening cooperation with Italian public institutions; securing the necessary resources; and progressively reducing the principal liabilities.
These activities form part of the mandate entrusted to the Commission by the founding Chirograph, which is aimed at restoring sustainable conditions and implementing the relaunch plan, while preserving the continuity of hospital services and the charism of its Founder.
Pope Leo listened attentively to the work carried out by the Commission thus far, confirming his determination to closely follow the path that has been undertaken.
The Commission will therefore continue its activities in accordance with the mandate entrusted to it, further examining and progressively implementing the lines of action identified, with the aim of ensuring continuity and a future for the Hospital and the Work established by Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, in service of the sick and their families.
