Raheem Sterling charged over Lamborghini crash, nitrous oxide possession
Former England international Raheem Sterling is set to appear in court next month after being charged with dangerous driving, possessing nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation and failing to provide a specimen.
Sterling, 31, was charged following a single-vehicle crash on the M3 in Hampshire in May.
The former Manchester City and Chelsea winger crashed his Lamborghini into motorway barriers near the Minley Interchange on the southbound carriageway on May 28, 2026.
He was arrested following the incident and later released on bail pending further investigation.
A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesperson said: “A driver will appear in court next month to face charges following a collision on the M3.
“Raheem Sterling, 31, from Berkshire, has been charged for the following offences: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, failing to provide a specimen.
“The charges come following a single vehicle collision, involving a Lamborghini, on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange [Hampshire], on 28 May, 2026.
“No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported. Mr Sterling is due to appear at Basingstoke magistrates court on 15 September.”
Police had initially suspected Sterling of “driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs”, although that allegation is not among the charges he now faces.
Following the crash in May, a source close to Sterling told BBC Sport there was “no proof” that drugs were present in his system.
The source also said the footballer had endured “an extremely tough couple of years” and had been made to “feel worthless” and “forgotten about”.
Sterling is currently without a club after leaving Feyenoord at the end of last season.
He joined the Dutch club on a short-term deal in February after leaving Chelsea by mutual consent.
Chelsea had signed Sterling from Manchester City for £47.5m in 2022 following his successful seven-year
spell at the Etihad Stadium.
During his time at City, Sterling won four Premier League titles, five League Cups and one FA Cup.
He subsequently spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Arsenal before returning to Chelsea, where he was excluded from the first-team squad and trained separately in 2025.
Sterling began his senior career at Liverpool and went on to win 82 England caps between 2012 and 2022.
He represented the Three Lions at three World Cups and two European Championships.
His court appearance at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court is scheduled for September 15.
