The Afrika Mayibuye Movement says the recent release of equitable shares to municipalities is based on political opportunism because of the upcoming local elections and not due to service delivery.
This comes after National Treasury released the remaining funds for July previously withheld from some municipalities.
Party President Floyd Shivambu briefed the media in Marshalltown, Johannesburg.
“For political convenience, the National Treasury has now decided to release the equitable shares of the budgets in municipalities which were not meeting the minimum requirement to receive the equitable shares that will help and that is done because of political opportunism because of elections, it is not done because of service delivery,”
The Afrika Mayibuye Movement believes Parliament is not the correct platform to conduct inquiries of the nature that the Madlanga Commission is looking into.
The commission is looking into criminality, political interference and corruption within the criminal justice system.
Shivambu says such a commission should also be extended to local government.
“We as Afrika Mayibuye Movement we unconditionally and unreservedly reaffirm our full confidence in the Madlanga Commission. The work of the commission, demonstrates that public institutions can investigate complex matters independently, professionally and transparently. Commissions of Inquiry that are identical if not similar to Madlanga Commission, should be extended to local government participation. The Madlanga Commission has demonstrated that parliament is perhaps not the correct instrument to conduct inquiries of the nature that Madlanga Commission is looking into.”
