The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) has called for a full and transparent investigation into a vessel collision at the Port of Durban, raising concerns over potential marine pollution, ecological damage, public safety and the structural integrity of port infrastructure.
In a formal inquiry dated September 3, 2026, and addressed to Transnet and relevant maritime authorities in South Africa, the environmental group sought detailed information regarding the reported collision involving the vessel HAWK S at the Port of Durban on September 1.

SDCEA said the incident warranted urgent investigation and transparent communication, given the strategic importance of the Port of Durban and its location within a sensitive coastal environment.
The organisation expressed concern about the possible environmental consequences of the collision, including potential fuel spills, chemical releases, loss of cargo and contamination of harbour waters and surrounding marine ecosystems.
“The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance writes to inquire on information regarding the reported collision involving the vessel HAWK S at the Port of Durban on September 1, 2026,” the group said.
“SDCEA is concerned about the potential implications of this incident for marine and coastal environmental protection, pollution prevention, public safety and the structural integrity of port infrastructure.”
The group requested confirmation on whether the collision resulted in, or created a risk of, pollution from fuel, marine diesel, lubricating oil, hydraulic fluids, hazardous substances or damaged cargo.
It also demanded details of any substances released, including their nature, composition and estimated quantity, as well as the extent of the affected area and measures taken to contain and clean up any pollution.
SDCEA further asked whether oil booms, absorbent materials or other containment equipment had been deployed and whether water, sediment or other environmental samples were being collected to assess potential contamination.
The environmental alliance also called for information on laboratory testing, monitoring locations, sampling frequency and how environmental data and investigation reports would be made available to affected communities and other interested parties.
Beyond immediate pollution concerns, SDCEA requested a comprehensive assessment of potential impacts on marine and coastal ecosystems.
The group said such an assessment should examine possible effects on fish and other aquatic organisms, harbour sediments and benthic ecosystems, water quality, birds, other fauna and environmentally sensitive habitats around the affected area.
It also called for follow-up environmental monitoring to identify delayed, cumulative or long-term ecological impacts that may emerge after the incident.

On the condition of the vessel, SDCEA requested clarification on whether the HAWK S sustained damage to its hull, tanks or below-waterline structures and sought information on the nature of its cargo.
The organisation also asked whether any cargo was damaged, lost or released into harbour waters and whether the vessel was carrying hazardous or potentially polluting substances.
While stating that it did not intend to prejudge the outcome of any investigation, SDCEA requested details on the circumstances surrounding the collision and the steps being taken to establish its cause.
Among the questions raised were whether the vessel was arriving, departing or manoeuvring within the harbour at the time; whether tugboats were involved; and whether mechanical, steering, propulsion or navigational difficulties contributed to the incident.
The group also sought clarification on whether weather conditions, visibility, currents, communication failures or operational shortcomings played any role.
SDCEA specifically requested confirmation on whether the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) had initiated a formal maritime casualty investigation and which authority would lead the overall investigation.
The alliance further raised concerns about emergency preparedness and asked whether the port’s marine pollution contingency plan had been activated following the collision.
It requested details of emergency response procedures, pollution prevention and containment measures, as well as any gaps identified in the response to the incident.
On public safety, SDCEA asked authorities to confirm whether any workers, contractors, vessel crew, harbour personnel or members of the public were injured.
The organisation also called for access to non-confidential reports arising from the incident, including environmental monitoring results, pollution assessments, structural damage reports, emergency response documentation and the findings of maritime investigations.
SDCEA said the final findings and recommendations should be made publicly available and accessible to communities potentially affected by the incident.
The group stressed that its inquiry was not intended to interfere with ongoing investigations but to promote transparency and ensure that appropriate measures were being taken to protect the marine environment, public safety and critical port infrastructure.
It urged Transnet National Ports Authority and SAMSA to provide a written response and identify officials responsible for environmental, maritime safety and infrastructure investigations.
“Given the importance of early environmental monitoring following an incident of this nature, we would appreciate any information that can be shared with us at this stage, as well as an indication of when further findings or monitoring results may become available,” SDCEA said.
The organisation said its objective was to remain informed and support transparency, environmental protection and the well-being of communities and marine ecosystems surrounding the Port of Durban.
