The redevelopment of St Michael’s Court in Thurmaston has now been completed, delivering nine new modern bungalows for residents.
Charnwood Borough Council marked the completion of the £2 million project with an official opening event on Wednesday, 17 June 2026.
The event was attended by the Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Colin Hamilton, who was the Council’s lead member for housing when the project was being developed.
Representatives from Charnwood Borough Council, Mercer Building Solutions and project partners also attended.
The redevelopment has transformed the former sheltered housing complex on Melton Road into high-quality, energy-efficient homes designed to better meet the needs of older residents and those with mobility issues.
The original St Michael’s Court building dated back to around 1970 and no longer met modern housing standards.
Cllr Jennifer Tillotson, the Council’s Lead Member for Housing, said: “It is fantastic to see the completed redevelopment of St Michael’s Court and to officially open these wonderful new homes.
“This project represents a significant investment in housing for our residents and demonstrates our commitment to providing modern, accessible and energy-efficient homes that meet people’s needs now and into the future.
“The bungalows look excellent and will make a real difference to the quality of life for residents who live here.”
The Mayor of Charnwood said: “I am incredibly proud to see this project completed after being involved when the redevelopment was first implemented.
“The transformation of the site is remarkable and these new homes will provide safe, comfortable and suitable accommodation for residents for many years to come.
“It was a pleasure to officially open the development and celebrate the hard work of everyone involved in bringing the project to life.”
The redevelopment was part-funded through a grant from Homes England.
Construction work began in February 2025 following the demolition of the outdated sheltered accommodation.
The completed development includes accessible layouts, air source heating systems, solar panels and landscaping improvements.
Tenants are currently moving into the properties.
Further information about the development can be found at www.charnwood.gov.uk/StMichaelsCourt.
The Council manages around 5,400 residential homes across Charnwood.
