Taraba SUBEB rejects claims of illegal tenure extension for officials

The Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB) has dismissed allegations that five of its directors and other senior officials are unlawfully remaining in office beyond the statutory retirement age.

The allegations, which have been circulating on social media, were described by the board as false, reckless and defamatory, with the management accusing those behind the claims of attempting to mislead the public and damage the reputation of the institution and its leadership.

In a statement signed by the management of TSUBEB, the board said all matters relating to appointments, retirements, promotions and other personnel issues are handled in accordance with the Taraba State Public Service Rules and other relevant regulations.

“The public service rules provide for extensions of service where such extensions are considered necessary in the public interest. Such extensions are subject to due process and approval by the appropriate government authorities,” the board said.

TSUBEB specifically rejected claims that its Executive Chairperson, Hon. Dr Christiana Taninga Binga, unlawfully retained any officer in service.

“The officers currently serving under approved extensions had obtained the necessary government authorisation, adding that all required procedures were followed,” the board explained.

The board urged members of the public to disregard the allegations, describing the publication as misinformation capable of creating unnecessary distrust in the institution.

It also warned individuals and groups involved in originating or circulating what it described as false and defamatory information to desist from doing so, noting that it reserves the right to pursue legal action against those found responsible.

TSUBEB also appealed to media organisations and members of the public to verify information through official government channels before publishing or circulating claims concerning the Board and its officials.

The board reaffirmed its commitment to its mandate of providing quality basic education and supporting ongoing reforms aimed at improving the sector across Taraba State.
