TUC backs death penalty for terrorism- related killings

The death penalty for terrorists and bandits whose actions result in loss of life has received the backing of the Nigeria Trade Union Congress.

TUC President Festus Osifo says tougher punishment could serve as a deterrent and send a clear warning to those involved in violent crime.

Osifo also says the arrest and prosecution of suspected terrorists and bandits by the Department of State Services is sending what he describes as the right signal to criminal elements across the country.

He argues that bringing suspects to trial, and ensuring that those convicted face the penalties prescribed by law, could help deter further attacks.

The TUC President also supports the death penalty for terrorists and bandits convicted of crimes resulting in loss of life, saying such punishment would demonstrate that violent crime can no longer be treated as business as usual.

Osifo commended the DSS for its arrests and prosecutions and urged the Service to sustain the effort.

He also praised what he described as ongoing reforms under the DSS Director-General, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, while calling for further action to tackle insecurity.

Osifo says organised labour will continue to hold government accountable, criticising failures while also acknowledging measures it considers positive.
