UBTH, NMA partner diaspora physicians to train specialists on endometriosis care

The Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Professor Idia Ize-Iyamu, has tasked healthcare professionals attending a three-day diaspora-driven medical training programme in Benin City to apply the knowledge acquired during the training to enhance patient care.

Ize-Iyamu spoke on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at the NIDCOM Diaspora Medical Health Impact Initiative event tagged “Endometriosis Ultrasound National Capacity Building Programme for gynaecologists, radiologists, sonographers, and reproductive health practitioners,” which was organised by UBTH in partnership with the Nigerian Medical Association and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

Speaking at the event held at the Centre of Excellence in Reproductive Health Innovation at the University of Benin, the CMD highlighted the critical role of trainers and participants in advancing quality healthcare delivery through enhanced capacity training and education.

She encouraged all stakeholders and participants to play an active role in advancing the nation’s health sector through meaningful collaboration and impactful contributions, while expressing appreciation to the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Pate, and the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, for their support and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system.

In his speech, the President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Professor Afekhide Omoti, commended the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission for its visionary leadership in fostering meaningful engagement between Nigeria and her citizens across the globe.

He said their contributions to global healthcare continued to earn respect for the country and exemplified the exceptional capacity of Nigerian talent.

Omoti reaffirmed the commitment of medical practitioners in Nigeria to the development of the health sector, saying the NMA remained committed to collaborating with NIDCOM, government, institutions, healthcare stakeholders, development partners, and diaspora organisations to drive excellence in the country’s health sector.

Notable medical professionals who facilitated the training included a gynaecologist and endoscopic surgeon from Australia, Dr Uche Menakaya, Professor Francesco Cedne from the University of Milan, Italy, Professor Ligita Jokubkiene from Lund University, Sweden, and Juliet Menakaya from Australia.
